The results are in: Jonathan Scott wins Ward 2 By-election

After almost two months of campaigning, Jonathan Scott has won the vacant Ward 2 Councillor seat

The results are in, and Jonathan Scott is Bradford's new Ward 2 Councillor. 

After almost two months of campaigning and one week of voting,  the winner of the Ward 2 By-Election was declared Monday evening just after 8 p.m.

Voter turnout was 32 percent for the by-election, with 1,100 of 3,438 electors casting ballots. Four electors declined their ballot and are included in the turnout numbers.

Final Results provided by The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury:

  • Jonathan Scott  - 399 votes (36.5 percent)
  • Stephanie Sinclair - 285 votes (26.1 percent)
  • Brian Carruthers  - 169 votes (15.5 percent)
  • Munawar Chudary - 109 votes (10 percent)
  • Gavin Maclean - 77 votes (7 percent)
  • Tiana Putric - 30 votes (2.7 percent)
  • Natasha Leskiw - 24 votes (2.2 percent)

“It is a great honour to have earned the support of Ward 2 voters," read a statement from Scott. 

“Thank you to the six other candidates for their campaigns and ideas, and to everyone who cast a vote. I also want to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to my campaign efforts—especially Karla Baynes for her support."
 
“It was good to see that even during the pandemic, the by-election had voter turnout comparable to recent general elections," he said. 

"I would like to welcome and congratulate Jonathan on his win as councillor for Ward 2," said Ward 1 Coun. Raj Sandhu. "I look forward to working with Jonathan and also want to thank all the candidates that put their name forward to run in this by-election. Special thanks to all the voters of Ward 2."

"I would like to thank all candidates for putting their names forward and running good campaigns," said Mayor Rob Keffer. "Congratulations to Jonathan Scott.  He worked hard on the campaign, and is very knowledgeable of the issues and I look forward to working with him on Council."

“I pledged throughout the campaign to hit the ground running to get things done," said Scott. “Ward 2 has a lot of important projects to champion, from improving the downtown, investing in our parks, to revitalizing the old community centre, to working to address traffic, speeding and upgrading the GO train station. These and more projects must be achieved with a strict commitment to keep taxes as low as possible."
 
“I will work hard on behalf of Ward 2 voters to get results and to honour the trust they have placed in me," he said.

Scott will join Mayor Keffer and the rest of council at their next meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 15. at 7 p.m.
