Some of the election results in Bradford West Gwillimbury would have been different had some of the younger citizens been able to cast ballots.

The CIVIX Student Vote program saw 127,000 elementary and secondary school students cast ballots for who they wanted to see on municipal councils and school boards.

In Bradford West Gwillimbury, students participated in the program at Chris Hadfield Public School, Harvest Hills Public School, Mother Teresa Catholic School, St. Angela Merici Catholic School, St. Charles Catholic School, St. Marie of the Incarnation Catholic School and W.H. Day Elementary School.

If it were up to the students, Mauro Di Giovanni, who finished second in Monday’s race to be the town’s next mayor, would have the top job. He earned 252 votes, while James Leduc, who won the actual election, placed second with 178, followed by Antonio Garcia with 134 and Michael Lotter with 97.

In the deputy mayor’s race, the students’ votes reflected the will of the electorate as they cast 368 ballots for Raj Sandhu and 223 for Brent Fellman.

Students voted for the following ward councillors.

Ward 1: Randy Hutchings

Ward 2: Jonathan Scott

Ward 3: Ben Verkaik

Ward 4: Rick Turner

Ward 5: Peter Ferragine

Ward 6: Nickolas Harper

Ward 7: Peter Dykie Jr.
