Bradford should consider Line 6 bypass, says Ward 2 candidate

We asked incumbent Gary Baynes and candidate Brian Carruthers some questions about key issues in Bradford West Gwillimbury. Here is what they had to say

Gary Baynes, incumbent

What do you see as the key issue(s) facing BWG at this time?

“One of the top priorities for council in the upcoming term will be improving traffic flow into, through, out of, and around Bradford.”

Do you have a solution in mind?

“We must continue to push hard for the Highway 400-404 Connecting Link, while further co-ordinating the traffic lights along Holland Street, and looking for other ways to alleviate traffic congestion. That includes taking a serious look at an additional bypass in the southeast quadrant of Bradford that would connect Line 6 to Peterman Road, then follow Peterman to Pumphouse Road, and an intersection at Bridge Street.

Also, we need to go through all departments’ budgets line by line each year to ensure we keep any increases in line, respect your tax dollars. On another tax-related topic, we need to ensure that the Highway 400 Employment Lands are occupied as soon as is reasonably feasible in order to better balance the tax base among residential, commercial and industrial in BWG.”

Are there any other issues or concerns you want to highlight?

“Yes – the continued focus on adding new parks and parkettes, as well as updating some older parks, along with a continued focus on the use of active transportation initiatives like the Walk ‘n Wheel Wednesday at all elementary schools.”

What inspired you to run in this election?

“I ran for council in 2014 because I wanted to give back to the community I love. I felt that my business experience in information technology, my focus on reducing one-time costs and on-going costs, and my collaborative style would all help me be an effective councillor. I worked hard as a councillor this past term, and if re-elected I will work just as hard or harder, as there are still a number of issues, challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Candidate Brian Carruthers did not respond.
