… And in the name of the Lollipop Guild, we wish to welcome you to Munchkinland.
There was standing room only at Bradford District High School earlier this week, when students at Fred C. Cook Public School performed their version of The Wizard of Oz in front of an audience of parents, grandparents, siblings and friends.
The musical production was the culmination of months of hard work and rehearsal by the cast of Grade 4-8 students, and by staff and parents who helped with the production, costumes and sets – including professional sound, lighting and videography.
“I know you are truly going to enjoy this,” said FCC school principal Madeleine Temmer at the start of the April 18 performance, thanking everyone from the directors, to the young cast members. “It has truly been a team effort.”
And then it was off on a journey along the Yellow Brick Road, in a production that closely followed the script of the classic 1939 movie.
There were outstanding performances by Dorothy, Auntie Em and Uncle Henry, Glinda the Good Witch of the North, the Wicked Witch of the West, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Toto the dog, Wizard and every Munchkin and Winkie Guard.
From Over the Rainbow, to If I Only Had a Brain/a Heart/the Nerve, the cast delivered delightful performances of the familiar music, to thunderous applause.
And by the end of the evening, it was clear that everyone agreed with Temmer, that “it’s been an absolute pleasure to embark on this journey from Munchkinland to the Yellow Brick Road, to the Emerald City.”
