NEWMARKET, Ontario – The Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting Place has become an important part of the cultural life of Newmarket and a showcase for regional talent. One of its first major events of 2019, open to everyone in the community, will be a concert and dance Saturday, Feb. 23, featuring the After Hours Big Band.

The 21-piece band, which combines the excitement of modern jazz arrangements with favourite classics from the swing era, is returning to the Meeting Place to begin its 2019 season.

Highlights of the band’s 2018 season included: a concert in March at the Meeting Place; a fundraiser for Trinity United Church in May; a main-stage performance at the Newmarket Music Festival in August for the eighth consecutive year, and a sold-out Newmarket Artisans concert at the Newmarket Old Town Hall in September.

Formed in 2006 by members of the Newmarket Citizens Band, After Hours is dedicated to advancing and modernizing big-band swing music while celebrating its legacy. Performances, led by trombonist and educator Dr. Michael Kearns, feature stirring vocals by George Marian and Jessica Owen, as well as jazz solos by members of the trombone, trumpet, saxophone and rhythm sections.

The Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting Place, located at 474 Davis Dr., offers entertainment and artistic events for the community throughout the year. Events are listed here.

Advance registration is advised for the Feb. 23 event.  Tickets are available at newtix.ca or 905-953-5122.

  • Time: 2 to 4 p.m.
