Local parents can get ready to party like it’s 1999 because a Much Music Video Dance for adults is coming to Bradford West Gwillimbury.

A group of local parents are organizing the Jan. 26 event in support of their kids’ school.

“It means that children that probably wouldn’t be able to go (on the Grade 8 grad trip) will be able to go,” said Rosi Martin, one of the organizers. “It (also) provides technology, and it’ll go toward other school needs.”

This year’s Grade 8 trip near the end of the school year is a three-day camping trek in the Muskokas, she said.

She and several other parents wanted to make fundraising more fun than the usual way of students selling chocolates or cards, or doing bottle and clothing drives.

“We’re kind of tired from the typical initiatives. We wanted to have an alternative means for raising money for the school that would be a little more fun,” she said. “(It will) offer parents something they can go out to instead of buying something they don’t need anyway.”

As the event will have a cash bar, the school benefitting from the fundraiser is not involved; the group of eight parents are doing it on their own, Martin said.

The organizers do not wish to reveal the name of the school for that reason, although their group goes by Friends of Fred.

She said Much Music is bringing the lights and music, which will have a 1980s and 1990s theme.

“It’s kind of a blast from the past,” she said.

As well, Milanoz Pizzeria is catering a dinner, and Sweet B’s is supplying desserts.

There will also be a silent auction, raffle and door prizes, and about a dozen local businesses are helping sponsor the event, Martin said.

She said the organizers are expecting about 200 people to attend.

“(It will be) a fun night. A chance to be able to put some dancing shoes on, reminisce,” she said. “Have a nice night out celebrating — a night away from the children.”
