Would anyone in Ontario, or Canada for that manner, argue that we have some challenging issues with our health-care system? While Canada is near the top of the list of nations in health care dollars spent per person, the quality of health care we receive is not ranked nearly as high.
Now, we could continue doing what we’ve done for decades, keep throwing more money at the system and hope that we get better results. Of course this would entail borrowing more dollars and running even larger deficits. I can’t help but think of that old adage; “what’s the definition of insanity...doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
What Premier Ford is suggesting may not be the best approach to solving some of our health-care system’s shortcomings, but I haven’t seen any other suggestions short of continuing to do what we’ve done for decades...and look where we’re at.
For-profit is not always a bad thing. For the majority of Canadians who stepped up for their COVID-19 vaccinations, just think, we’d still be waiting for our first shot if we wanted a not-for-profit government delivered vaccine...now that’s scary. If you take your car in for repair and you don’t like the service you receive, you go to another provider. If you go to your health care provider and don’t like the service your receive, what are your options?
For those who think all that’s needed is more money, please include your plans for financing. How much more are you willing to pay to cover the additional cost?
Personally, I would like my government to continually strive to deliver the best health care we can get for the money we’re spending. We are not getting that currently, and just throwing more money at the problems in our health-care system isn’t the solution.
We can do much better, it just requires being open to thinking out of the box. Let’s not let perfect be the enemy of better.
