The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 123 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in today's update (April 8).
The deaths reported today include an Innisfil and an Essa resident: one man between 65 and 79 years old who died on April 5, and one woman over the age of 79 who died on April 4. Both cases were sporadic and not linked to any outbreaks.
There are 720 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.
The health unit has reported 1,591 cases have screened positive and/or been confirmed with sequencing as variant cases. Of those, 326 are still active cases. Screening and sequencing tests can take several days, and sometimes results are not returned until after the individual has recovered.
Sequencing and PCR tests have confirmed 1,174 cases of the B.1.1.7 (variant strain that originated in the UK) in Simcoe Muskoka. There have also been 18 cases of the P.1 variant that first originated in Brazil in the region and two cases of the B.1.351 strain that originated in South Africa.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 8,324 cases of COVID-19 with 7,292 of those cases recovered and 207 cases ending in death.
There are 39 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes five new hospitalizations since Yesterday.
The health unit has administered 114,408 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka, with 2,599 doses given yesterday.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified):
- Collingwood (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact and one is outbreak-related.
- Wasaga Beach (4): One person between 18 and 34 years old and three people between 45 and 64 years old.
- Barrie (37): NIne youth under 18 years old, 16 people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, eight people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are attributed to community transmission, eight are linked to close contact, and one is outbreak-related.
- Springwater (1): One person between 65 and 79 years old whose case is attributed to community transmission.
- Innisfil (12): One youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, three people between 45 and 64 years old, four people between 65 and 79 years old. One case is attributed to community transmission and two are linked to close contact.
- Bradford West Gwillimbury (33): Nine youth under 18 years old, 11 people between 18 and 34 years old, seven people between 35 and 44 years old, five people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are attributed to community transmission, 19 to close contact, and one is outbreak-related.
- Orillia (2): Two people between 18 and 34 years old.
- Severn (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old.
- Midland (3): One person between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old.
- Tiny (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
- Penetanguishene (3): One person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is outbreak-related.
- Essa (4): Two people 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
- New Tecumseth (9): One youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, one between 45 and 64 years old, and three people between 65 and 79 years old. Five cases are linked to close contact.
- Adjala-Tosorontio (5): One youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and one person 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact.
- There are two new cases listed with location information pending and one case in Muskoka (Bracebridge).
