6 new COVID cases reported in Simcoe-Muskoka today

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported six new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths today (June 15). 

There are 142 active cases in the region. 

There were 94 new COVID cases reported by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit during the week of June 6, which is the lowest weekly total since early October, and a 40 per cent decrease in cases compared to the week of May 30. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,163 cases of COVID-19 with 11,354 of those cases recovered and 246 cases ending in death.

There are 22 people from Simcoe County and one person from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes one new hospitalization since yesterday's report. 

The health unit has reported a total of 4,820 variant strain cases, with 95 of those still active. 

Today's update also includes the following information on variants of concern: 

  • To date 3,939 local cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern B.1.1.7 (alpha), 156 cases have tested positive for the P.1 (gamma) variant of concern, 30 cases have tested positive for the B.1.351 (beta) variant of concern, 15 cases have tested positive for the B.1.617.2 (delta) variant of concern, and an additional 680 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing).
    • Note: all B.1.617 cases are currently presumed to be of the B.1.617.2 (delta) lineage as it is the dominant B.1.617 strain in Ontario.

To date, 376,216 Simcoe-Muskoka residents (62.2 per cent of the population) region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, and 68,683 people (11.4 per cent of the population) have also received a second dose. 

According to the health unit, 14 per cent of the region's adult population (aged 18 and over) have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and another 59 per cent have received one dose. The remaining 27 per cent is unvaccinated. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified). 

  • Barrie (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. Both cases are listed as community-acquired. 
  • Oro-Medonte (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old. One case is outbreak-related and one case is linked to close contact transmission. 
  • New Tecumseth (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. Both cases are linked to close contact transmission.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on June 15).
