Social and recreational programs will be offered this fall for Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The programs will be offered at elementary schools in Bradford, Cookstown and Innisfil, and will focus on using recreation, music and play skills to support social skills development.

Children's Friendship Training
An eight-week, evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated children ages 6 to 12, who are interested in learning ways to help them make and keep friends. This program will be offered at Cookstown Public School in Cookstown.

Music Social Skills Program
An eight-week, multi-component music platform designed to improve emotional understanding and social skills of high-functioning 5 to 12-year-old children with ASD. This program will be offered at Lake Simcoe Public School in Innisfil.

Play Ball Kidz Recreation Program
An eight-week, multi-component recreation program designed to improve the gross motor skills and social skills of high-functioning 5 to 12 year old children with ASD. This program will be offered at Honourable Earl Rowe Public School in Bradford.

Parents and schools are an important part of the programs and will receive resources and support to help the children develop and practice new skills at home and at school.

Limited spaces are available. Complete the initial application form linked in the program flyer. This does not guarantee enrolment into the program. You will be contacted for an initial telephone interview to assess if the program is appropriate for your child.

Please contact your school or Rebecca Mancini, ASD After School Social Skills Program Coordinator, at [email protected] for more information.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB's Strategic Priorities under the pillars of excellence in teaching and learning and equity, diversity and inclusion.
