NEWS RELEASE
SIMCOE COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
************************
The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) offers French Immersion (FI) at select schools throughout Simcoe County beginning in Grade 1. The goal of the FI program is to enable students to communicate in French with a high level of proficiency, enabling them to function with ease in both English and French.

Information for families who are considering entry into Grade 1 FI for the 2021-22 school year is available on the SCDSB website.

Entry into the FI program is determined through a digitally randomized lottery system. A link to access the Grade 1 FI online application form will be available starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1 until 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18. Once available, families will find the application link on the SCDSB website under Elementary, French as a Second Language, Grade 1 French Immersion Application.

Enrolment into the FI Program in Grade 1 is limited to a maximum of 40 students per designated FI site. While every effort is made to accommodate all FI applications, available space and staffing will determine how many students can be registered. Parent(s)/guardian(s) can contact their child’s school in advance if they do not have Internet access at home or require assistance accessing the online application. Beginning in September 2021, the SCDSB’s FI program will be available to Grade 9 students. Students in the secondary FI program must complete 10 courses from Grades 9 to 12 to receive a Certificate of French Immersion Studies. Families of students who are not currently enrolled in the SCDSB’s FI program can contact [email protected] to identify their designated FI site in order to learn more about the program. SCDSB secondary schools that will be hosting the FI program are holding virtual information nights in December/January. Parents/guardians can contact their local site for details.

Transportation is available to students enrolled in FI programs within their designated French site. Centralized community bus stops will be established to provide access for students to attend the specialized program. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to transport the student to and from the centralized stops at designated times for pick up and drop off.

Please note that the designated sites for FI may change during the program, which may also include splitting the program between two different sites.
