NEWS RELEASE
SIMCOE COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

Schools across the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) were awarded 53 Ontario EcoSchools certifications this school year. Fifty-three elementary, secondary and alternative secondary schools achieved varying levels of recognition, up from 44 last year.

This school year, the SCDSB achieved:
  • Three Platinums
  • Twenty-four Golds
  • Twenty-four Silvers
  • Two Bronzes

Ontario EcoSchools status is obtained by implementing environmental initiatives within schools, including recycling programs, waste-free lunches, energy conservation programs and school ground greening projects. Certification promotes hands-on actions that students can take to make their schools more environmentally friendly.

“There’s a growing awareness and commitment in our society to go green, and this is being led by our youth,” says Jessica Kukac, Environment Systems Coordinator at the SCDSB. “Our students and staff are thinking up innovative ways to recycle, reduce waste and reuse materials at their schools, as well as in their homes and communities.”

This year, a record number of over 1,900 schools from 58 school boards across Ontario certified as EcoSchools.

EcoSchools certifications and school Green Teams were recognized at a celebration on June 12 at the SCDSB Education Centre.
