Back Alley Cruisers showcase classic cars at Pre-Snow Show

The 20th annual event was held at the Cookstown Steam Show grounds

The Bradford Back Alley Cruisers Car Club holds a final show ‘n shine every year – a Pre-Snow Show that invites car collectors to show off their muscle cars, classics, hot rods, rat rods and street rods, trucks and motorcycles to an appreciative crowd, before the snow flies.

It’s also a fundraiser for the Helping Hand Food Bank in Bradford West Gwillimbury. Entry is a donation of non-perishable food or a cash donation for the food bank; the proceeds of a bake sale, games and draws are also earmarked for the charity.

This year marked the 20th anniversary of the Pre-Snow Show. Bradford club president Gord Houston directed the parking and placement of the entries as they arrived — dressed in shorts, despite the chilly temperatures.

“I’m not putting long pants on until this is over,” said Houston, suggesting the shorts were a kind of lucky charm to ensure good weather. But with grey skies, temperatures in the low teens, and the threat of rain, he admitted, “doesn’t look that lucky.”

The rain did hold off for much of the day this weekend. There was even a glimpse of sun, as visitors strolled past Packards, Chevelles, classic Chevrolets, Fords and Corvettes, and the DJ played tunes such as Mustang Sally.

Entries came from across Southern Ontario, with members of other Back Alley Cruisers clubs, including Midland and Orillia, showing their support.

For the first few years, the Bradford club’s end-of-season car show was held at locations that included the Bob Fallis Sports Centre on 10 Sideroad, and even Holland Landing’s Anchor Park.

Now, the show has a permanent home at the Cookstown Steam Show grounds, a locale that offers plenty of space, flat fields for parking, and a central location that attracts participants and visitors.
