Bond Head Lions will be holding another e-waste collection day

Fundraiser for the Lions is also a way to keep hazardous materials out of landfill

Last year, the Bond Head Lions nearly filled a bin with electronic waste. This year, they hope to collect even more. Miriam King/Bradford Today

That old toaster. Outdated computers and peripherals that no longer function. Old flip phones. Broken radios and VCRs. The television set that gets a single station.

Rather than throw those broken/outdated/unwanted electronics into the trash, residents are encouraged to keep e-waste out of landfill, and participate in e-waste recycling.

The Bond Head Lions are planning to make it easy to do the right thing.

On September 12, the Bond Head Lions Club will be holding its annual e-waste collection day at the Bond Head Community Hall on County Road 27. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, residents are encouraged to drive in to the Community Centre, and drop off their unwanted electronics, as well as scrap metal and gently-used clothing.

It’s not only an opportunity to keep potentially hazardous heavy metals and other materials out of landfill, it’s a fundraiser for the Lions, who will partner with a recycler to ensure that the valuable metals and materials in the e-waste are recovered, and the value of the recycled materials go to the Lions’ community projects.

The Bond Head Lions have been holding e-waste collection days for years, as a fundraiser. The County of Simcoe recently began holding its own collection of electronic waste, in all 16 member municipalities - but the Lions are reaching out to the community for support, hoping that residents will save their e-waste for the local collection, and causes that include the Helping Hand Food Bank in Bradford, Lions Dog Guide programs, and many other community projects.

So, hunt through the garage for those old power tools, busted lawnmowers and broken vacuum cleaners. Check through those drawers filled with abandoned cords, non-functioning cell phones, broken keyboards and peripherals. Find those old stereo systems and microwaves, and get rid of that TV sitting in the spare bedroom. Scoop up the scrap metal, and fill bags with unwanted clothing and linens.

Then bring it all to the Bond Head Community Centre on Sept. 12, and support the environment and the Bond Head Lions.

(Note: No refrigerators or propane tanks, please. And please ensure that gas-powered lawn mowers do not have gas in the tank).
