The Innisfil Garden Club’s Fall Flower & Vegetable Show, held at the Churchill Community Centre on Saturday, was one of the “best ever,” according to more than one member.
Dahlias, chrysanthemums, perennials and annuals, vegetables, floral arrangements – the tables were covered with entries and specimens. Both the number of exhibits and exhibitors, and the quality of the entries were up from last year.
Marilyn Elliott won the Chrysanthemum Trophy with her first-place Chrysanthemum Over 2” spray.
Cathy Reid won the award for Best Gladiolus. “This is the fourth time I’ve won this award,” she said of her perfectly-proportioned entry.
And the Largest Spanish Onion Award, sponsored by Lakeview Gardens, was won by Jenni Murrell – who also took firsts for her chrysanthemum, and floral designs, including a First and Best In Show for an architecturally-sculpted arrangement of foliage.
Visitors could not only enjoy the blooms, but tea and luncheon for only $7, surrounded by the bounty of the season.

The next meeting of the Innisfil Garden Club, on Monday, Oct. 7, will feature popular guest speaker Paul Zammitt – demonstrating container gardening. The meeting takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Churchill Community Centre, in Innisfil.
The Angus Horticultural Society hosts its 90th anniversary celebration on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Angus Mobile Home Park Recreation Centre, 35 Third St. Admission is free. Vendors, historical records, unveiling of a special plaque, plus a hot dog barbecue, with finger food, watermelon and anniversary cake – proceeds to the Angus Food Bank. Rain or Shine.
The Bond Head-Bradford Garden Club’s Fall Show and Meeting takes place Thursday, Sept. 26 at the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre, 715 Simcoe Road in Bradford, at 7:30 p.m. Speaker David Hawke will talk about Wildflowers – Legend and Lore. The meeting will also feature a Fall Flower and Vegetable Show, with categories that include zinnias, asters, coleus, chrysanthemums, lavender, dahlias and the “Last Rose of Summer.”
OHA District 16 Fall Seminar takes place Oct. 26 at the Tangle Creek Golf & Country Club, 4730 Sideroad 25 in Thornton. Doors open at 9 a.m., for a day of vendors, flower show, silent auction, and guest speakers that include Karen Stephenson on Medicinal and Edible Wild Plants, Anne Brolley – Gardening for Four Seasons, and the Couchiching Conservancy. Tickets are $40, and include light refreshments and lunch. Register by Oct. 11.
