Bradford Bulldogs Novice and Atom teams are not only hockey warriors on the ice, they are social justice warriors off it and away from the arena.

Every year, the players hold a fundraiser for the Helping Hand Food Bank, in partnership with the Zehr’s Market in Bradford. This year is no exception.

On Oct. 27, the Minor and Major Novice and Atom teams – in their jerseys – will be on hand at Zehrs, urging shoppers to support the Helping Hand Food Bank in Bradford, by donating purchases of non-perishable food or cash.

The Minor Novices will be out from 8 to 10 a.m., Minor Atoms from 10 a.m. to noon, Major Atoms from noon to 2 p.m., and Major Novice team from 2 to 4 p.m.

The young players are hoping the community will come out and support the food bank – and support the teams, by also coming out to the BWG Leisure Centre for their games, and cheering on the Bulldogs.

This is the second year of the initiative for the Minor Atoms. "Last year our team collected $400 in cash," and filled the huge metal basket with food, said coach Joe Lotto. "Our team then stocked the food they collected on the shelves at the food bank. It was quite a learning process for the boys."
