There’s more than one reason to support the monthly ‘Treasure Sale’ at Bradford United Church.
For the church, “it helps a lot to pay the bills and help the charities,” said volunteer Louise Desjardins. “It helps to recycle, keeps things out of landfill – and what we don’t sell, we usually take to the Blue Door Shelters. They’re always looking for mugs, sheets and bedding, towels.”
All the items for sale at the monthly rummage sales are donated by church members and community residents, decluttering and culling unwanted “treasures” from their closets, cupboards, garages and basements. The donated goods, set out on tables, can be purchased by treasure hunters for a donation to the church.
And that’s another positive: people can find what they need, at bargain prices. “A lot of people come because they don’t have a lot of money,” said Desjardins. “You never know what you’re going to find.”
“We try to help others, and ourselves along the way. The money goes to help the operation of the church,” said organizer Helen Walker. Residents can donate, “knowing it’s going to a good cause – and find things, knowing they don’t have to pay an arm and a leg.”
From books, housewares, antiques, prints, CDs and DVDs, to plug-in coolers and power tools in great condition - “You never know what will turn up,” said Walker.
Walker, Desjardins, Connie Taylor and a team of volunteers help set up, man and take down the Treasure Sales, on the last Saturday of the month – always happy when a donation can help the buyer, as well as Bradford United Church.
Shopper Jan Evans found a paperback book in mint condition, “a tear-jerker (movie) for me, and two glass pie plates. When I bake pies for charity, I use these,” she said. “Where can you get a pie plate for a dollar?”
