There is still time to honour local veterans through the Bradford legion’s Veteran Banner Program.

In a program launched last year, each durable vinyl banner honours a veteran who served in Canada’s military or merchant marine. The banners feature the Canadian flag and a British Union Jack, logos of the legion and Canadian Armed Forces, poppies of remembrance, and a photograph of a veteran.

To date, 32 of the banners have been produced, and will be hung on light standards on the main streets of Bradford beginning Oct. 11. The banners will stay in place until after Remembrance Day, said legion president Mike Giovanetti, one of the originators of the program.

The banners cost $150 to produce. Anyone wishing to honour a family member who served or another veteran is asked to contact Giovanetti as soon as possible at 905-775-5025.

The Bradford Branch 521 of the Royal Canadian Legion will be holding its annual Remembrance Parade on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m., marching down Holland Street to Bingham Street, and from there to the legion cenotaph at 115 Back St., where a remembrance service and wreath-laying ceremony will take place. The community is invited to come out and honour Canada’s veterans.

The annual Remembrance Dinner at the legion will take place on Nov. 10, and a Remembrance ceremony at the cenotaph on Nov. 11 — marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.
