Bradford Terry Fox Run shines on through the rain

It was a soggy morning, but spirits were bright for the Terry Fox Run on Sunday morning

Rain or shine, the Terry Fox run went on despite the rain making an appearance just before the kickoff on Sunday morning.

The community came together to raise money and run for the cure; a legacy left behind by the late Terry Fox in his efforts to raise funds for cancer research.

Families and friends gathered to celebrate, support and remember those who have been affected by this disease.

One such cancer warrior is Jimmy the Clydesdale horse from Dreamwinds Equine Assisted Learning Centre in town, reminding us cancer has no prejudices.

The Terry Fox Foundation donations all go back into the local communities that raise them.

On average for every dollar raised 84-86 cents it put back into the community. In the past 19 years, the Bradford community has raised over $200,000 that has made its way to the treatment and research in local hospitals and cancer treatment centres.

Dr. Peter Anglin, local oncologist at the Stronach Cancer Centre in Newmarket, has used these proceeds to treat cancer patients from in and around the Bradford area.

“The money you raise does get right to patients…the research I’ve seen, and the drugs developed actually get to them” Dr. Anglin confirmed in his speech before the race.

So, what does it take to execute the Run for the Cure?

Volunteers!

They are vital to the preparation, execution and post run process. Project coordinator, Elsie Silva Kniff expressed the importance of how volunteers help make a successful fundraising campaign.

“The more volunteers we have, the more fun stuff we can add on. Just reaching out to local businesses to get prizes, food everything we get for the day of is raised that year.”

Some small roles they are looking for are sponsorship, helping out with their social media page or administrative task likes labels and hanging signs and organizing volunteers.

Next year, The Terry Fox foundation will be celebrating its 40th anniversary and to find out how to volunteer and/or donate, contact Elsie at (905)251-3214 or visit the website here.
