A baby girl was born in the front seat of an SUV in Bradford West Gwillimbury today.

The baby was born about 10 minutes after a crew of four firefighters arrived at 12 p.m. at the vehicle stopped on Bridge Street between Dissette Street and Canal Road.

Baby and mom are “doing fine” and were transported to Southlake Regional Health Centre, said BWG Fire Chief Kevin Gallant.

York Region Paramedic Services arrived just before the baby was born, but the baby was “well on its way” when fire crews arrived, he said.

"It's always nice when you have something go right," he said, adding BWG firefighters get medical training. "They were prepared to deliver the baby if paramedics didn't get there in time."

The entire call took about 25 minutes.

The BWG firefighters involved declined interviews, but "they are just happy everyone is OK," Gallant said.

BWG firefighters get calls to help deliver babies in emergencies "every once in a while," he added, but it is certainly "out of the ordinary."

"You never know what you're going to get," he said.
