Cyclists will unite on Sept. 29 for the Tour de T1D, a charity ride in support of Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre’s (RVH) Paediatric Diabetes Clinic.
The event is hosted by cyclists Dr. Richard Goudie, an RVH Emergency physician, and Dr. Darlene Newnham, in honour of their son Lukas and all youth who live with Type 1 diabetes.
“The team at the Paediatric Diabetes Clinic have been an incredible emotional support to us as we have maneuvered through the challenges of having a son with a chronic disease,” says Dr. Goudie. “So much care, compassion and education is devoted to each child and their family.”
“Living with Type 1 diabetes is very challenging. My blood sugar is affected by every aspect of my life from food to exercise to stress. The team at the Paediatric Diabetic Clinic helped me learn how to best manage this chronic disease,” says Lukas Goudie, a high school student. “The dietician helped me come up with ways to manage hypoglycaemic episodes, the social worker helped me through some pretty difficult emotional times and the nurse and doctor’s input is what keeps me alive.”
Almost 200 children with diabetes receive care at RVH’s clinic each year.
“When a child is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, family life and daily routines may seem more complicated and overwhelming,” says Rhea Taplin, RVH manager, Child and Youth Ambulatory Care. “Our team is dedicated to developing opportunities for children, youth and families to connect, receive support and learn about diabetes while focusing on their overall well-being. RVH is extremely grateful to Dr. Goudie and Dr. Newnham, their ride participants and sponsors, for supporting our family-centered programming and helping us provide the best possible care.”
The event, which begins at 7 a.m. with rider sign in, features a scenic 25 km, 50 km or 100 km ride beginning at The Heights Ski & Country Club located on Horseshoe Valley Road and continuing through the picturesque hills of Horseshoe Valley. Following the ride, cyclists are invited back to The Heights to enjoy a live performance by local band, Code Blue.
Riders and volunteers are encouraged to set up a personal fundraising page for a chance to win a seven-night stay at Villa Del Mar, in Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos.
To be eligible to win participants need to: Register online to ride or volunteer at tourdet1d.ca; set up a fundraising page through the website and reach a minimum fundraising goal of $250 before Sept. 15. Full contest details can be found on the Tour de T1D Facebook page.
