Date set for Fierte Simcoe Pride festival

'We know this will be a really fun time for everyone,' says Fierte Simcoe Pride president

Fierte Simcoe Pride will have their day of celebration in Barrie this summer.

The county’s pride organization was given approval from the city's Creative Economy department to host a Pride festival in Barrie on Sunday, Aug. 11.

Fierte Simcoe Pride president Brandon Rheal Amyot was very excited to bring a summer pride festival to the city.

“We found out at 11:30 a.m. (Wednesday) that we were approved and we are so excited to be bringing Simcoe Pride to the city of Barrie with a festival,” Amyot said. “This is our eighth annual Pride week, but our first festival event in Barrie.”

The Barrie sub-committee of Fierte Simcoe Pride will organize and oversee the festival, which will be a part of Pride week that runs in the county from July 29 to Aug. 11.

While many cities are celebrating Pride this week, Amyot said that they have always held theirs in the summer, and many communities hold events at different times of the year.

“We have always held a summer Pride week and, truthfully, so do many other communities across the country,” Amyot said. “Halifax and many other cities have long celebrated outside this week in June.

"Regardless, we know this will be a really fun time for everyone.”
