The Simcoe Muskoka Addictions Awareness Committee is holding a free screening of the award-winning documentary film, The Stairs. The event will be taking place on Nov. 18 at 6:15 p.m. at the Five Points Theatre located at 1 Dunlop St. W. in Barrie.

After the film, the Addictions Awareness Committee will be holding a discussion and providing insight from the film’s director, Hugh Gibson.

The Stairs focuses on the impact of substance use and harm reduction in the lives of three individuals who are employees at the Regent Park Community Health Centre in Toronto.

Their work includes assisting those with substance use disorders while continuing to manage their own personal experiences with drugs and alcohol. The filmmaker takes an honest look at the extraordinary and unique journeys individuals embark upon when attempting to gain control over addiction.

More on Harm Reduction

Harm reduction has become a vital addition to the treatment of substance use disorders. The focus of this philosophy centres on reducing stigma as well as the potential harms associated with substance use without necessarily requiring people to abstain or stop their use. Some better known examples of harm reduction in relation to addictions include safe injection sites, needle kits, and methadone maintenance programs.
