The road to satisfying employment can be bumpy, especially if you are new to Canada.

That’s why Georgian College’s Job Finding Club for Immigrants (JFCI) and its Occupation-specific Language Training (OSLT) courses help newcomers obtain skills in order to transition into the Canadian workplace.

On Tuesday, March 26, the two programs will hold their second annual Newcomers Navigating Careers event at Georgian’s Career and Employment Community Services, 48 Collier St. in Barrie.

This free event will take place between 5 and 7 p.m. and feature a panel of community experts that will provide information on relevant employment-related topics to inform and inspire.

“This is a great opportunity to bring together newcomers who are looking for a satisfying career with professionals in the community who can offer advice and information,” says Patricia Whittington, director, Indigenous Services and Access Programs.

“We were really pleased with the turnout last year and the positive feedback we received made us realize we should make it an annual event.”

The evening builds on the strengths of the Job Finding Club by helping participants increase their understanding of the Canadian job market, expand professional networks and stand out to employers.

"JFCI is a definitely good place to help you find a professional job. Besides learning Canadian workplace rules and culture, we spend lots of time on job searching, resume writing and practicing job interview questions,” said JFCI client, Jason Jia. “Finding a job here is teamwork with your service consultant and peers."

After the community panel, there will be an opportunity for refreshments and interaction to build and expand professional networks. For more information call 705-722-1505.
