Friends of the Library book sale draws in large crowds (10 photos)

The Friends of the Library hosted its last book sale of the year this weekend

The Friends of the Library hosted its third and final book sale of the year this weekend at the BWG Library and Cultural Centre.

The three day event kicked off on Friday night with a special preview day for those interested in getting first dibs on the selection of books.

An entry fee of $10 was required on the Friday night, with free admission on Saturday and Sunday.  All proceeds from the admission on Friday and the books sales went towards the Friends of the Library charity that helps fund programs at the BWG Library.

Books of all genres were available for purchase, including biography, travel, classic literature, cookbooks, paperback, and children’s books. There were even collections of CD’s, DVD’s and puzzles to peruse as well.

The Friends of the Library sale has been a yearly tradition for the past 25 years, starting at the library’s previous location near the downtown core.

The sale used to run only once a year, but has since increased to three times per year: one in February, one in May and one in September.

The Friends of the Library is a registered charity run by volunteers who help support programs and services at the BWG Library and Cultural Centre that are not funded by the government.

The team of volunteers meet once a month to discuss plans for their upcoming sales and programs to bring into the library.

Friends of the Library Treasurer, Milt Calder has been volunteering with his wife Jean at the Friends of the Library for the past 18 years.

“I like libraries, I’ve liked them since I was eight years old,” he said.

He noted that since he started volunteering, Bradford has grown quite a bit and that means every year they receive more and more book donations. The last two sales at the library have brought in over $3,500.

Leftover books from the sale are sometimes kept for the next book sale or are sometimes given to senior’s homes in Bradford. Some also get  shipped to a charity in the United States called “Better World Books” that provides reading material to those in third world countries.

The books are a mix of donated reads from the community as well as some from the library’s collection.

The next Friends of the Library book sale will be taking place Feb. 21 - 23.
