Gardeners get blooming good deals at plant auction

All the money raised from the auction went back to the garden club.

The Bond Head/Bradford Garden Club’s annual plant auction started with a warning from auctioneer Sam Lee.

“I don’t know anything about plants,” said Lee. “I have to be told.”

It was his helper, Gloria Pengelly, past president of the garden club, who provided the details of growth habits, soil and sun preferences, blooming habits, and flower colour.

She also provided warnings: some of the plants culled from members’ gardens can be aggressive and need to be kept in check.

Lily of the valley, sweet woodruff, lamium, ferns, day lilies — the potted plants were auctioned off at the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre on May 24 for dollars apiece, helping enthusiastic gardeners restock their gardens and the garden club raise funds.

The next meeting of the Bond Head/Bradford Garden Club takes place at the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre on June 28 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will include a Summer Flower Show, featuring best rose of show award, and special speaker Sarah Caranci on chair yoga for gardeners.

The June meeting will be the last session until September, with gardeners taking a break during the summer months.
