Health unit confirms 45 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka, 4 in Bradford

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 45 new COVID-19 cases and one death in today's update (May 21). 

The death reported today was a Barrie man between 65 and 79 years old who died on May 15, 

There are 584 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

In Simcoe-Muskoka, 243 cases have ended in death since March 2020.

The health unit has reported 4,329 variant cases confirmed to date, with 442 of those cases still active. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 11,596 cases of COVID-19 with 10,212 of those cases recovered. 

There are 23 people from Simcoe County and one from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19. There have been no new hospitalizations since yesterday. 

To date, 269,814 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 44.6 per cent of the region's population and more than 54 per cent of the region's adult population. About 4.3 per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine.

Yesterday (May 20) the health unit reached a new record in vaccinations, administering 6,477 doses of vaccine in one day.

In Simcoe County, 236,247 residents (43.9 per cent of the population) have received one dose of vaccine, and 22,141 (4.1 per cent) have received two doses.

The health unit will not be posting another public update on local cases until Tuesday, May 25.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).

  • Collingwood (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case was listed as community-acquired. 
  • Springwater (3): Three people between 18 and 34 years old. one case is listed as community-acquired, one as outbreak-related, and one was linked to close contact transmission.
  • Barrie (19): Four youth under 18 years old, seven people between 18 and 34 years old, four people between 35 and 44 years old,  and four people between 45 and 64 years old. Six cases are linked to close contact transmission, five are listed as community-acquired, and one is outbreak-related. 
  • Innisfil (4): One youth under 17 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, and two people between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact transmission, one is outbreak-related and one was community-acquired.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (4): Three people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. One case is outbreak-related. 
  • Orillia (5): One youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Penetanguishene (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old whose case is linked to close contact. 
  • Midland (3): Two people between 18 and 34 years old and one person over 79 years old. Two cases are listed as community-acquired.
  • New Tecumseth (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old whose case is linked to close contact transmission.
  • Essa (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old.  
  • There are two new cases in Muskoka today, including one in Bracebridge and one in Muskoka Lakes.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on May 21).
