Health unit confirms 57 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 57 new COVID-19 cases and one death in today's update (May 14).

The death reported today was a Barrie man between 65 and 79 years old. He died on May 6 after contracting COVID-19. His case was not linked to any outbreaks.

So far the health unit has reported 244 new COVID cases in the region between May 9 to 13, which is down significantly from 443 cases reported between May 2 and 8 and 560 cases reported between April 25 and May 11. 

There are 905 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 4,057 variant cases confirmed to date, with 657 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 11,280 cases of COVID-19 with 9,592 of those cases recovered and 239 cases ending in death. 

There are 31 people from Simcoe County and two from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes three new hospitalizations since yesterday's update.

To date, 238,499 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 38.2 per cent of the region's population. About 3.5 per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine.

In Simcoe County, 208,811 residents (37.6 per cent of the population) have received one dose of vaccine, and 18,114 (3.3 per cent) have received two doses.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).

  • Clearview (3): One youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • Barrie (15): Four youth under 18 years old, seven people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Six cases are linked to close contact transmission, and four are listed as community-acquired.
  • Springwater (1): One person between 35 and 44 years old. 
  • Innisfil (5): One youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (4): Two youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. 
  • Orillia (8): Two youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old and two people between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact, one was outbreak-related, and one is listed as community-acquired. 
  • Oro-Medonte (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Ramara (2): Two youth under 18 years old. Both cases are linked to close contact. 
  • Penetanguishene (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case is listed as community-acquired. 
  • Essa (4): One youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is listed as community-acquired.
  • New Tecumseth (9): Two youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and three people between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact. 
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • There are three new cases in Muskoka, two from Bracebridge, and one from Muskoka Lakes.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on May 14).
