October is storytellers’ month, at meetings of local historical societies, bringing history to life...

The Innisfil Historical Society welcomes Cecelia Burke of The Original Flag Store in Thornton, who will share the history and stories of her family’s well-known flag business. The meeting takes place this Saturday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Knock School Heritage Site, 7756 Sideroad 10 at Line 9 in Innisfil.

On Monday, Oct. 21, the Tecumseth and West Gwillimbury Historical Society will be hosting “A Fireside Chat – Newton Robinson and area remembered,” when lifelong residents Nancy Bell, Doug Jebb, Bob Sturgeon, Bill Vernon, Lloyd West and Charlie Wilcox will share stories from the past.

Topics range from the famous cattle-rustling case in Beeton, to the crash of two planes in Bond Head; and from Hurricane Hazel in 1954, to the Great Snowstorm of ’75. Refreshments will follow.

Come out for an evening of history brought to life, at the Newton Robinson Hall (formerly Tec-We-Gwill Women’s Institute Hall) in Newton Robinson, County Rd. 27 and Line 10 BWG on Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. TWGHS members are free; drop-in admission is only $5. For more information call 905-936-6549.

On Oct. 24, the BWG Local History Association holds a rare Thursday evening meeting at the Bradford public library, starting at 7 p.m. The topic is ‘Storytellers!” All are welcome to come out for an evening of stories, history, and refreshments.

And on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m., the Lakeshore Branch of the Innisfil ideaLAB & Library, at 967 Innisfil Beach Rd., hosts ‘Remembering Dieppe’ – a presentation by Jayne Turvey, daughter of Dieppe veteran and Prisoner of War Jack Poolton. The father and daughter are co-authors of Destined to Survive: A Dieppe Veteran’s Story; copies will be available for purchase. Registration recommended, at the Lakeshore Branch, 705-431-7410.
