Horseshoe Resort opens to skiers today — earliest in history

Mount St. Louis will also make history as it plans to open Friday with nine slopes and a healthy 30-50-centimetre base

Horseshoe Resort will open its ski season today, marking the earliest opening in the facility’s history.

Thanks to an early start to winter that saw snow first fall from the skies on Nov. 1, local ski resorts have been busy trying to take advantage of Mother Nature's fury.

Thanks to much-colder-than-seasonal temperatures, local ski hills have been able to make their own snow for several nights already.

It's a perfect storm for skiers.

Officials at Horseshoe say the Nov. 13 opening is the earliest since the Oro-Medonte resort opened in 1962.

According to their Facebook page, Horseshoe will have two runs open today in addition to a few features in the snowboard park.

More runs are expected to be open this weekend.

For now, it's just daytime skiing as the resort will be open for skiing from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Mount St. Louis Moonstone is also making history. The Oro-Medonte facility is set to open on Friday, which also marks its earliest-ever opening.

According to their Facebook page, they will have nine slopes and a small rail set-up for opening day thanks to a 30-50 centimetre base, which is unheard of for this time of year.
