John Street parking lot getting a makeover this spring

Work will take around six to eight weeks to complete

The parking lot at Moore and John Streets is getting a makeover this spring, which will see it resurfaced and reconfigured.

At the Downtown Revitalization Committee meeting on Wednesday, Director of Development and Engineering for Bradford West Gwillimbury, Peter Loukes said the town will be tendering the project this month, with work set to begin later this spring.

The parking lot will be getting a much-needed overhaul, with resurfacing, relined and additional parking spaces, planters, illumination and rough-ins for electric vehicles.

"We did get money from LSRCA to put in infiltrating pipe...as the stormwater comes in, it has an opportunity to dissipate in the bedding in the gravel underneath the parking lot, that is a bonus," added Loukes.

The work has been budgeted for $100,000 and should take about six to eight weeks to complete.

Chair of the committee, Coun. Jonathan Scott added that more signage will be added to let residents know that parking is free.

He noted sometimes a Green P sign makes drivers think it is a paid parking lot, like in the city.

Director of Community Services for the town Terry Foran said they are looking at how and where the signs will be put up to make drivers aware of the free parking.

Coun. Scott noted how this is one of many projects "setting the table" for the eventual reconstruction of Holland Street, which will make the downtown core a real destination for residents and visitors.
