Killer’s sentencing postponed in death of Dana Camber

Toronto’s James Garthwaite drove to Barrie to buy drugs last year and shot Camber. Two other men have also been convicted in incident

The family of Dana Camber will have to wait a little longer to know the sentence for James Garthwaite, the man charged with manslaughter in her death.

Shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday, Garthwaite, 26, of Toronto, entered a Superior Court of Justice room at the Newmarket Courthouse for sentencing in the 2017 death of Camber, but the sentencing was put off until Oct. 9 at the Barrie Courthouse.

Garthwaite, in handcuffs, was remanded in custody.

Details about what happened leading up to Camber’s death were released in August, following Garthwaite’s guilty plea.

On the evening of March 14, 2017, Garthwaite, Greg Keays and David Glover drove from Toronto to Barrie to buy drugs. Once in Barrie, Garthwaite planned to visit his drug dealer to demand his money back. Garthwaite’s drug dealer was at Camber’s apartment.

He tucked a sawed-off shotgun into his jeans and approached the apartment building on Kozlov Street at about 2:28 a.m.

There was a chase in a hallway there, Garthwaite reached into his pants to get the gun, and the gun went off as Camber was trying to close the door. The 50-year-old grandmother was shot in the abdomen.

Keays and Glover both pled guilty in June to accessory after the fact, and they received a sentence of two years probation and time served.

The Crown is seeking a 12 to 14 year sentence in the case. The defence is looking for jail time in the single digits.
