ALLISTON – Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, the mental health and well-being of many Canadians has declined drastically, proving especially difficult for individuals who already struggle with mental health and addictions.

Throughout the pandemic, Krasman Centre in Alliston has been providing front-line support services to many of those experiencing the highest burdens of health, social and economic impacts from COVID-19.

“Our drop-by centre provides basic necessities such as food, snacks, clothing and outdoor survival items to folks facing food insecurity and living in poverty” says Outreach Peer Supporter Cathy Marengeur. “We recently opened the doors to allow a limited number of individuals to come inside to have a meal, access the internet and phone and to have the empathetic ear of our Peer Supporters to listen to their concerns, and support them with navigating the range of resources available in the community”.

As a low-barrier, Peer Support-based “drop-by” centre, Krasman Centre accommodates people from all walks of life, including those who experience mental health extremes, substance use challenges and those experiencing homelessness.

COVID-19 physical distancing guidelines have reduced access to community resources, social service organizations and other people. Folks who are experiencing loneliness, isolation and looking for a social connection can also access support through Krasman Centre via phone or virtually via Zoom.

“Unfortunately, many of the people we support do not have access to the technology needed to connect virtually, which is a barrier for them to get the support they need in this time of a pandemic”, says Executive Director Susan Dobson.  “Social connectedness is crucial for many people’s mental health and overall well-being. In order to maintain opportunities for people to stay socially connected, we have implemented all the necessary Infection Prevention and Control measures to enable us to open our doors for folks to come inside and access the support they need”.

Located at 17 Paris St. in downtown Alliston, the Krasman Centre offers peer support-based programs for people with mental health, addictions and housing challenges. For more information, visit www.krasmancentre.com or call (705)435-0054 or (Toll-free 1-888-780-0724).
