Man airlifted to hospital, traffic snarled after Highway 11 crash near Bradford

Four-vehicle crash briefly stopped GO Transit service in Bradford West Gwillimbury

A man was airlifted with “very serious injuries” to a Toronto hospital Friday after a four-vehicle crash on Highway 11, which closed a section of the road and stopped GO Transit service, said police.

Highway 11 between Bathurst Street and just south of the Bradford Bridge reopened shortly after 10 a.m.

While closed, Canal Road was accessible to drivers, said York Regional Police Insp. Peter Casey.

“There would be no point of going southbound from Holland Street unless you’re going to a business in between,” he said at the time.

At 5:22 a.m., three vehicles crashed just south of the border between Bradford and York Region. A short time later, a fourth vehicle was involved in the crash, Casey said, adding he does not yet know how the crash occurred.

One man was airlifted by Ornge to a Toronto trauma centre with very serious injuries, but he has since been downgraded to serious but stable condition, he said.

One other person was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, he said.

The York Region police major collision unit is assisting other York officers at the scene.

GO Transit service in Bradford was briefly stopped because there was a backup of traffic on Toll Road, with the potential to block the train track, Casey said, noting this is no longer a problem.
