Back for its sixth year, the Metro Green Apple School Program demonstrates Metro’s ongoing commitment to fostering healthy eating habits at an early age that can be carried into adulthood.

Metro awarded $1,000 each to 500 elementary and secondary schools all over Ontario, inspiring teachers to find engaging ways to talk to their students about healthy eating.

The goal of the Metro Green Apple School Program is to encourage Ontario students to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their daily meals and snack routines by participating in school projects that are designed to make a positive impact on their home, school and community life.

Many Simcoe County schools were chosen. Among those selected:

  • Couchicihing Heights (Orillia)
  • Twin Lakes Secondary School (Orillia)
  • Lake Simcoe Public School (Innisfil)
  • Fred C. Cook (Bradford)
  • Tecumseth South Central Public School (Tottenham)
  • Andrew Hunter Elementary School (Barrie)
  • Bear Creek Secondary School (Barrie)
  • Bogart PS (Barrie)
  • Eastview Secondary School (Barrie)

The support was appreciated, said Jen Peltoniemi and Julie Leigh, teachers from Ferndale Woods Elementary School in Barrie.

“During the program, we focused on healthy eating, food groups and trying new food items,” the explained. “Mathematics and language expectations were also incorporated into the lessons. The Metro Green Apple School Program Grant allowed us to collaborate, teach life skills, help to build character, and expand our knowledge of healthy eating. We truly appreciate the opportunity and hope it can continue into the future!”
