More than $600 K donated to new community health hub

The funding is part of a $45 million commitment to area hospitals that serve Simcoe County

County of Simcoe Warden Gerry Marshall presented Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care (Waypoint) with a $615,359 donation Wednesday in support of the new community health hub.

The funding is part of a $45 million commitment in support of capital and redevelopment projects that will be allocated over 15 years to area hospitals that serve Simcoe County residents. From 2017 to 2031, $3 million will be distributed each year through collaboration with the Simcoe County Hospital Alliance which includes hospitals in Alliston, Barrie, Collingwood, Midland, Newmarket, Orillia as well as the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care in Penetanguishene.

Dating back to 1994, the County has committed $107 million to support area hospitals.

“Construction of the new community health hub is well underway,” said Carol Lambie, Waypoint president and CEO. “The project will co-locate Waypoint’s outpatient and community services with CHIGAMIK Community Health Centre and a new Youth Wellness Hub.”

“Thanks to the support of community partners like the County of Simcoe, we are able to increase access to care by co-locating mental health and addiction services with primary care. The building will be a welcoming place for clients, staff and the community with designated space for youth programming, traditional Indigenous healing and spiritual care, with the common spaces accommodating the particular needs of children, patients and people with physical challenges.”

“Our Council is pleased to step up once again in support of area health care and invest in mental health services,” said Warden Gerry Marshall. “Waypoint plays a critical role in our communities, and through our recent funding of the Have Hope campaign for youth mental health awareness and training program, this significant investment in a new community health hub demonstrates our ongoing commitment to partnering with Waypoint to address mental health in our communities and fund services our residents need to cope and manage their illness.”
