Local residents may have spotted a familiar face on their TV screens recently as Audrey Donohue, 9, of Mount Albert, is featured in a new War Amps public service announcement (PSA) airing across Canada.
Being born a right arm amputee hasn’t stopped Audrey from living a full and active life. As a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, she received financial assistance for the cost of a device that allows her to hold onto her hockey stick.
The PSA also shows how Audrey has built a strong friendship with Leah Neumann, 16, who has a similar amputation and shares a love of hockey. Together, they demonstrate The War Amps philosophy of “amputees helping amputees.” Through the CHAMP Program, Audrey also attends regional seminars where she meets other kids just like her.
“The CHAMP Program was there for us from the start and has been so important to our family,” says Darren, Audrey’s dad. “Thanks to the public’s donations, Audrey can participate in activities just like any other child.”
The War Amps receives no government grants. Its programs are possible through public support of the Key Tag and Address Label Service. For more information, visit waramps.ca.
