On Wednesday, May 31, over 45 women from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association (AMWA) gathered together at 11 a.m. to celebrate 100 years of the AMWA by planting trees at Sheldon Creek in Adjala-Tosorontio.

Approximately 200 trees were planted.

The significance of planting trees is not only important for maintaining our climate, but also for enhancing our environment for years to come.

We met with a member of the South Simcoe Streams Network. She greeted all volunteers and explained the protocols and gave us safety tips on handling the shovel along with protecting ourselves in the fields. Most importantly, she reminded all participants to keep themselves hydrated. She had a team of five wonderful volunteers who were ready to guide us on how to properly plant the trees. A group of us went across the creek in a boat guided by the South Simcoe Streams Network volunteers.

Even with the sun blazing, all members showed great enthusiasm and eagerness to plant trees. Ladies worked together in pairs to plant as many trees as possible. Whether it was passing the maple or cedar trees from the buckets, to digging with a shovel, using the rubber mallet and pins to hold the coconut mat securely in place around the trees, great sisterhood and bonding was displayed by all attendees. It was such a gratifying feeling knowing that we have planted trees that will help in providing clean air.

The environmental project co-ordinator of this initiative really appreciated our efforts and support. We look forward to finding other ways in the community to help the town and community at large.
