Low-income earner? First-time filer? Still learning to navigate the English language? Senior in need of assistance in filling out your tax return?

The Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library is working with the Canada Revenue Agency to co-ordinate income tax clinics through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.

Trained professionals will be available to assist those who are having difficulty preparing their own tax returns at clinics that will be offered in March and April at the library. Clients are asked to sign up and make an appointment for assistance.

“Last year, our volunteers helped prepare over 180 income tax returns, and all appointment times were filled,” said Wendy Zwaal, adult services librarian. “This year, we have recruited additional volunteers and have added extra appointment times so we can assist more people.”

The volunteers are mostly involved in accounting or taxation, Zwaal said.

“One of them is a student, three work in accounting, and one of them works for the Canada Revenue Agency,” she noted.

The program is designed to help people with a “modest” income (under $35,000 for an individual, under $45,000 for a couple), and a “simple” tax situation. That includes income from employment, pension and benefits, RRSPs, interest, familial support, scholarships, bursaries or grants – but not self-employment, rental or business income and expenses, capital gains, or bankruptcy.

Taxpayer information is always kept confidential and secure.

Sign up for an appointment at borrower services at the library, 425 Holland St. W., or call 905-775-3328, ext. 6109.

“The availability of appointments varies by the volunteers’ availability,” explained Zwaal. “We are fortunate to have a variety of times – Saturdays and Sundays, Monday and Wednesday evenings, and Thursday during the day, and on a couple of extra days in March. Hopefully we can accommodate most people.”
