Drivers will have to make way for several road closures Sunday for the Run for Southlake in support of Newmarket's hospital.

The town announced it will close Davis Drive from Parkside Drive/Longford Drive to Leslie Street April 24 from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. to accommodate the annual Southlake Foundation event.

A detour route will maintain access to homes and businesses, with York Regional Police also directing traffic.

Councillor Kelly Broome, who represents the town on the event committee, said they are proud to be holding the event both virtually and in-person this year.

“We’re very excited to see families out for the run,” she told council April 20. “I just wanted to both thank the community for their efforts and also encourage those who are looking for something inspiring to do for Sunday to consider going to the runforsouthlake.ca and registering."

The event is returning for in-person festivities after running virtually the past two years, though is keeping a virtual option. Organizers have raised approximately $179,117 of a $200,000 goal as of April 22.

The run will also have some closures at designated streets to prevent vehicles from entering Davis Drive:

  • Main Street
  • Superior Street
  • Charles Street
  • Prospect Street
  • Roxborough Road
  • Alexander Road
  • Carlson Drive
  • Hamilton Drive
  • Belfry Road
  • Howard Road
  • Ashton Road
  • Huron Heights Drive
  • Patterson Street
  • Bolton Avenue
  • Lundy's Lane
  • Bayview Parkway
  • Vincent Street

“Southlake needs everybody now more than ever,” Mayor John Taylor said, noting the hospital is making progress toward a new building. “Southlake is going to need us walking as much as we possibly can, year in, year out, and fundraising other ways as well.”
