Public Health Ontario has reported 2,199 new cases of COVID-19 today (May 16).
Today's report includes 3,079 recoveries and 30 new deaths.
The May 16 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:
- 26,656 active, lab-confirmed cases, which is down from 27,566 reported yesterday.
- 1,292 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 1,546 reported yesterday.
- There are 785 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (same as reported yesterday) and 552 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 560 reported yesterday).
- The province reported 33,142 tests were processed yesterday.
- Another 12,559 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 14.7 million tests have been completed.
Variants of concern (Ontario-wide)
- 107,541 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7).
- 677 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
- 1,983 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil.
- Another 33,038 cases have screened positive with a mutation detected, but the lineage for the variant strain not yet sequenced.
- According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.
Vaccines
- There were 139,583 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on May 15, which is down from 154,104 given on May 14.
- As of 6 p.m. on May 15, the province reported 7,064,815 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
- In total, 429,636 people have been fully vaccinated.
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 509,316 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 474,175 recoveries and 8,485 deaths, of which 3,939 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.
