Ontario reports 3,216 new COVID cases Sunday

Sunday's report includes 3,653 recoveries and 47 new deaths

Public Health Ontario has reported 3,216 new cases of COVID-19 today (May 9). 

Today's report includes 3,653 recoveries and 47 new deaths

The May 9 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 32,404 active cases, which is down from 32,888 yesterday. 
  • 1,640 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 1,832 reported yesterday. 
    • Public Health Ontario advises that more than 10 per cent of hospitals did not submit data, as is generally the case on weekends. An increase in the number of hospitalizations is possible when reporting increases.
  • There are 848 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (down from 851 yesterday) and 580 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 588 reported yesterday).
  • The province reported 38,540 tests were processed yesterday.
  • Another 16,085 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 14.5 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 903 are from Toronto, 752 cases are from Peel, and 335 are from York Region.

Variants of concern (Ontario-wide cumulative count)

  • 91,624 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7).
  • 400 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • 1,229 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil.

Vaccines

  • There were 121,075 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on May 8, which is down from 138,125 on May 7.
  • As of 8 p.m. on May 8, the province reported 6,144,685 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 392,835 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 492,303 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 451,591 recoveries and 8,308 deaths, of which 3,931 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.
