Paint the town yellow for Hope is Growing Campaign

Town taking part in the Hope is Growing campaign to help lift spirits during the pandemic

The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury is excited to participate in this year’s Communities in Bloom (CiB) challenge, 'Hope is Growing'.

To spread hope throughout the community, the town is encouraging residents to plant a Hope Garden featuring the colour yellow, the international colour of ‘hope’. The goal of the global movement is to see the colour yellow all across the country and around the world.

Hope Gardens can include flowers, shrubs, fruits and vegetables, and can include the use of planters, hanging baskets or anywhere you have space to grow anything yellow at home.

It has been a difficult time, as residents enter another year of pandemic living.  Communities need positivity and brightness in their lives now more than ever. This simple campaign is inclusive, easy, and fun for all ages.

*Contest Alert* Take a picture of your Hope Garden, planter or hanging basket full of ‘yellow’ and email it to [email protected] or drop off a photo sealed in an envelope to the BWG Library (425 Holland Street West, Bradford) anytime between May 1 and Aug. 31 for a chance to win prizes.

Entries must include your name, address, email and phone number with the subject line “Hope is Growing BWG” (one entry per residential address).

There will be two grand prizes of $150 gift certificate to a Bradford restaurant of the winner’s choice. One Hope Garden will be selected by members of the Healthy Communities Advisory Committee, and the other will be selected by way of a random draw from all entries. Winners will be announced by Sept. 15, 2021.

For more chances to win some ‘mini-contests’ throughout the summer, use any social media platform to show off your Hope Garden photos by using the hashtag #hopeisgrowingBWG.

Not sure where to start? Click here for free seeds from your local library to start your own garden or planter:

To encourage others to participate, print off a free Hope is Growing poster to share in your window.

To enter the National CiB Hope is Growing contest, simply register your garden at www.hopeisgrowing.ca for further prize opportunities and a chance to have your Hope Garden featured nationally.

The Town of BWG will also be participating by putting yellow flowers and plants in town flower beds and baskets throughout the community.

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness. Hope whispers that things will get better.” - Human Rights Activist Desmond Tutu, African-Anglican cleric and theologian.

Encourage your neighbours to start a Hope Garden and help paint the town yellow to spread courage and strength in our community during these most difficult times.
