Anna Goldsmith is at it again.
The Stroud singer-songwriter, who grew up in Newmarket, has released her latest single, Brain Boyfriend, reflecting on an ideal pairing that turned out to be a mirage.
“I had the idea for the song when I was in California one summer,” Goldsmith, 17, said in a media release. “I was talking with this guy and he led me on. I really thought he liked me, but when I admitted my feelings for him, he said he didn’t feel the same.”
Goldsmith describes the song as “a new wave/grunge combo, and fun dance music that’s conveying the classic angry teenage girl: Me.”
Though young, Goldsmith seems to have found her musical voice.
Earlier this year, she competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing's annual National Student Audition for the first time, coming home a champion. She’s also appeared in the Artists Against Homelessness ensemble, done gigs at Toronto’s El Mocambo, Innisfil’s Friday Harbour and New York City’s Chelsea Music Hall, and sang the national anthem at a 2023 swearing in ceremony for South Simcoe Police Chief John Van Dyke.
Goldsmith’s biggest influence is Lady Gaga because their messages — about being yourself and confident no matter what the rest of the world says — strongly align.
