Small store, big heart - big donation to the food bank

Donation presented just in time for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is approaching, and Bradford’s Helping Hand Food Bank just got a boost from the local No Frills grocery store.

On Monday, Reali’s no frills handed over a donation of $1,500 to food bank representatives – mostly the result of fundraising by customers, who donated at the till.

“This was 90 percent the customers,” said Peter Reali, owner. “They raised $1,310… The store topped it up to $1,500.”

In square footage, the Bradford No Frills is fairly small, but it has a big heart and has always supported the local food bank, said the representatives, and has helped to keep the shelves stocked.

Thanksgiving is around the corner, but planning is already underway for this year’s Christmas hampers.

Registration for the hampers – each of which will contain a turkey or ham, everything needed for Christmas dinner and breakfast on Christmas morning, as well as weekly food supplies – begins Nov. 1.

“Every time the food bank is open, people can register,” explained volunteer Carolyn Kahn. Registration continues right up until Nov. 30.

To facilitate the registration process, anyone for whom English is a second language is encouraged to bring a friend or family member to translate, and ensure all questions are answered correctly.

The Helping Hand Food Bank, located at 123 Moore St., is open from 1 to 2 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Fridays. For more information, click here.
