Five people killed in mass shooting at Vaughan condo building

York Regional Police say five victims and suspected gunman are dead, while a sixth victim is in serious condition; male suspect was shot by responding officers

Five victims are dead, a sixth victim is in hospital in serious condition, and the suspect is dead following a shooting at a condominium building in Vaughan Sunday night.

York Regional Police were called to the residential building at 9235 Jane St., north of Rutherford Road, for a report of an active male shooter who had shot several victims, police said.

The suspect was shot by police and pronounced deceased at the scene.

York Regional Police has notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

The building was searched by the emergency response unit to ensure there are no additional victims and that it’s safe, police said.

A police presence will be on the scene as the investigation continues, police added.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the victims and their families,” Chief Jim MacSween said at the scene, which he described as "horrendous."

There is no further threat to public safety, he said.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Updates will follow.
