Treasure Sale to help with 'endless' repairs needed at 155-year-old Bradford church

The Bradford Arts Centre, which is at Bradford United Church, has received funding, but the church itself needs help

The Bradford Arts Centre has received several grants to fund improvements to the performance space at the Bradford United Church, as well as the installation of an electronic sign, and the creation of new workshop and classroom space in the basement.

It’s all part of the effort to create an arts hub in the 155-year-old church, one portion of which dates back 168 years.

But the church still operates as a church, and its members have faced fundraising challenges as they try to maintain the fabric of the historic building.

The United Church Women and church council hold regular fundraisers, such as last Saturday’s ham and scalloped potato dinner, and monthly Treasure Sales and euchre parties.

Bradford United is also launching a new building fund, hoping to raise the money to help address ongoing issues, including a recently-discovered leak in the narthex, the lobby entrance to the church.

“We have re-shingled the roof, but there was some damage done,” said Rev. Jim Keenan, admitting that maintenance can be a challenge. “It is an old building,” even though the structure doesn’t look its age.

“It’s a very nice-looking building, and it will be fixed up,” said Keenan. “I’m glad the work is being done – but it’s an endless amount of work.”

The steps also need repair, the exterior needs repainting, some windows need replacement.

“It will never end,” he said.

The community can help support Bradford United Church and its programs this Saturday. From 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the church will be holding another Treasure Sale, with treasures culled from members’ basements, closets and cupboards available for a donation to the church. The January Treasure Sale will feature an outstanding selection of donated books.
