Vendors share Christmas cheer and crafts at Bradford legion

Brunch with Santa and New Year's Eve potluck are two of the events coming up at the Royal Canadian Legion in Bradford West Gwillimbury

Christmas crafts, wreaths and decorations… Quilts and hand-knitted toques and scarves… Apple butter, fudge and shortbread cookies.

There were all kinds of gift ideas and stocking stuffers at the Bradford legion’s Craft Show and Bake Sale on Saturday.

Twenty-two vendors participated in the show, some taking the opportunity to raise funds for a good cause. The Krafty Knitters Ministry, a crocheting and knitting club at Trinity Anglican Church, sold hand-made items as a fundraiser for the Bradford Community Meals, which are weekly free dinners, open to the community, held every Friday evening at Bradford United Church.

For others, the craft show was an opportunity to make some money at the holiday season – and show off their crafting skills. Paulene Hare, or The Apple Butter Lady, had only been making the traditional treat since June, but said with pride, “I perfected it along the way!”

And young crafter Sydney McIntyre was urged by her family to create the painted outdoor wooden decorations that she was offering for sale. “My mom wanted one done,” McIntyre said of her paintings of snowmen and the Grinch, each one different.

Throughout the show, visitors could purchase a lunch of peameal on a bun, hot dogs or homemade chicken soup and sandwiches, and learn more about the Royal Canadian Legion in Bradford.

Coming up at the legion, at 115 Back St. in Bradford:

  • The popular Friday Night dinners and Meat Rolls take on a festive tone. On Dec. 14, the legion serves up a Christmas dinner for $10 per person, starting at 6:30 p.m. The evening will include entertainment by a singer, and a Turkey Meat Roll – every prize will be a turkey to give away.
  • Brunch with Santa. On Dec. 16, families are invited to come out to the legion for brunch with Santa, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., only $5 per person. Enjoy pancakes and sausages, and bring a camera to take a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
  • New Year’s Eve Potluck Party! Something different – a potluck party on New Year’s Eve, at the Bradford legion. Doors open at 7 p.m. on Dec. 31. Bring a favourite dish. Music, noisemakers, desserts and champagne will be provided. Tickets are $10 each. Contact the legion at 905-775-5025 and sign up to indicate the potluck dish you plan to bring.
