Collector pins made to look like Carrot Fest's favourite orange mascot will be limited at this year's event.
Every year, volunteers with the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre in Bradford West Gwillimbury usually make 1,000 Gwilly pins, named after Gwilly the carrot mascot, out of orange-and-green felt and other materials.
Proceeds from their sale – $1 each – go the Ronald McDonald House Children’s Charities, providing a home away from home for families of children receiving treatment at Toronto hospitals.
But this year, the Danube centre will produce only 400, said past president Elaine Love, and will rely on the generosity of donors to make up additional funds.
The Danube will be selling the pins at a booth shared with The Elden of Bradford retirement residence, providing information and selling their famous pins.
“Last year we made 1,100 pins, and we raised $2,000,” said Love. “The community is great!”
