A wrong-way driver who crashed head-on into another vehicle along Highway 11 in 2018, severely injuring another driver, has been found not guilty of dangerous driving.
In an hour-long decision delivered Wednesday morning, Ontario Superior Court Justice Cary Boswell found that Michael Grelowski was in a confused state as a result of hypoglycemia, caused by his Type 1 diabetes.
“Mr. Grelowski was at the very least confused and disoriented,” Boswell concluded.
Grelowski had earlier pleaded not guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm in the April 11, 2018, crash and stood trial in Barrie last month.
The 41-year-old Orillia man refused to comment as he left the courthouse Wednesday on crutches.
Court heard Grelowski was on his way home after work that night when he drove southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 11 between Soules Road and Menoke Beach Road four years ago north of Orillia.
Jennilyn Reed was driving her two children to register for soccer when she suddenly noticed Grelowski’s SUV coming toward her, having little time to react, court heard. She suffered life-threatening injuries and continues to walk with a cane. Her children received less serious injuries.
